The Bishop of Lewes Watches the Game, 1910

This postcard shows the crowd at a football match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Swindon on 23 April 1901. The photograph is focused on the Bishop of Lewes, Leonard Burrows.

Standing out from the crowd

It was not unusual for photographs of football matches to focus on the crowd rather than the game at this time.

Although he is not dressed in his priestly garments, his top hat would have been sufficient to mark him out from the working class supporters in their cloth caps.
