HMS Lizard menu for Christmas Day, 1944

This Christmas menu was produced for the servicemen at HMS Lizard in 1944. It lists the dishes to be served during the day, along with a cartoon sailor and his dog spying a Christmas pudding.

Queer Soup

HMS Lizard was not a ship but a naval base in Shoreham. It was mainly used for training purposes but it also provided a repair service for landing craft.

The menu for Christmas Day is impressive given the limited availability of food during rationing. Even though it cautions of ‘usual Christmas fare if available’ it seems to have most of the traditional trimmings in place.

Supper features something called ‘Queer Soup’, which we’ve not been able to identify. We’ll give it a cautious ‘yum’!
