West Street, 1967

This photograph shows bars and a restaurant in West Street. It was taken on 27 July 1967 by Brighton Corporation, the forerunner to the Council today.

Night life

1967 may have been the Summer of Love, but if there was any flower power at work in West Street it was probably edelweiss. The ‘Wunder-Bar’ in the centre of the photo is offering German ‘bier’ along with ‘dancing, Alpine food and songs’.

But it is not the only establishment in this photo that is offering exotic entertainments beyond the shores of Britain. Look closely at the Watneys pub on the right and you will see a sign promising a ‘Bar Safari’.
