VE Day Street Party, 1945

This photograph shows a street party taking place in St Paul’s Street, Brighton. It was held to celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe.

What were they eating?

Street parties like this were held throughout the UK, but with food rationing in place the catering may seem frugal by today’s standards.

Can you see what the children are eating at this party?

Answer
White bread sandwiches and jelly. Many children would probably be happy with this today!
