Promotional Flyer for Brighton Carnival, 1922

This flyer was produced to promote the 1922 Brighton Carnival. It was sponsored by Evershed’s, a Brighton based soap manufacturer.

State of the nation

The flyer depicts England as a woman sitting on a dolphin. The names of numerous seaside towns are noted around the image, with Brighton identified as having the ‘best air in England’.

Although the towns are in more or less the right place on the map, there are a couple of glaring inaccuracies.

  1. Wales is not a part of England
  2. Dolphins are mammals and don’t have gills
