Land slip at Black Rock, 1920s

This postcard was produced to record a recent landslide on the cliffs at Black Rock. The view is taken from Rottingdean looking west towards Brighton.

Tobacco & sweets

Lots of incidental detail is captured in this image. The east end station of Volk’s Electric Railway can be seen at the bottom of the slope and the Palace Pier can be glimpsed in the distance.

The Cliff Creamery seems to have been a local landmark at the time. In addition to selling butter and cream, tobacco was also sold here — not something you would expect to see sold alongside dairy produce today.
