Fragment of a Roman object

This object was dredged from the sea, about four miles off the coast of Shoreham. It has been dated to Roman times and was part of a much larger object.

Can you guess what it was?

Answer
It’s part of an amphora.

An amphora is tall jug with two handles on the sides of the neck. They were commonly used to store and transport liquids and grain.

This piece includes the neck on the left with one of the handles on the right.
