Engine 122 of the London Brighton South Coast Railway

This photograph shows a locomotive of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway. It was part of a collection compiled by Ralph Stent, a local railway enthusiast.

Happy at work

Stent collected over 2,000 photographs, mostly of locomotive engines that ran on the railway lines around Brighton.

While many of these mainly appeal to enthusiasts for railway engineering, many of us can relate to the photographs that contain people.

For me, what’s striking about this photograph is the pride of the railway workers. It’s easy to misread facial expressions in photographs, but the overall impression here is of men proud in their work and the powerful machines they operate and maintain.
