Crowds waiting to see the first aeroplane race, 1911

This postcard shows crowds on Brighton beach waiting to see an aeroplane race in July 1911. Sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper, competitors raced across the UK, with the last leg taking place between Brighton and Brooklands.

Where are the aeroplanes?

Photographers were keen on capturing local events and selling the images as postcards. But they would often settle for crowd scenes, possibly hoping that those who attended would purchase the postcard and try and spot themselves.
Have a look at the people on the beach and see if you can spot anyone actually looking out for the planes.
