Brighton Aquarium, 1870

This print shows the original design for Brighton Aquarium. It was made in 1870, two years before the new building opened to the public.

What was built and what remains?

The final design of the Aquarium is close to what was built, but there were some changes. Take a look at this print on our Digital Media Bank to see what changed.

Brighton Aquarium eventually became the Sea Life Centre and the building looks quite different today. This is because it was extensively remodelled in the late 1920s.

How much of the original building do you think remains today? As a clue, you could take a look at these photos on our Digital Media Bank showing the reconstruction of the building.
