After the fire in St Peter’s Church, Preston, 1906

This postcard shows St Peter’s Church in Preston Park. It shows the aftermath of a fire on 23 June 1906.

What can’t we see?

Edwardian postcards often functioned as a news medium, capturing recent disasters.

The fire in St Peter’s Church gutted the interior. It damaged several medieval frescoes which had been covered up during the Reformation and only rediscovered in 1830.

You will struggle to find a sign of these works in the blackened walls. But you can learn more about the church and see a present day shot of the interior on the Royal Pavilion & Museums blog.
