Crowd at Goldstone Ground

This postcard shows the crowd at a football match in the Goldstone Ground at Hove. This was the home ground of Brighton and Hove Albion who were playing a cup tie against Port Vale.

Proud supporter

Can you guess who might have bought this particular postcard? There is a mark in pen on the card which gives a clue.

Can anyone date this match? We think it took place in about 1920, but if you can confirm the date please leave a comment below.

  1. This was taken on 9 January 1932. That was the first (and only ) time Brighton and Hove Albion played Port Vale at home in a Cup tie. The Albion lost 2-1.

  2. The proud supporter is a Mr Langrish I believe. Members of the Langrish family lived in Queens Park Road, Brighton. This third round FA Cup match was played on 9 January 1932. Port Vale won 2-1. The next FA Cup meeting between the sides came 82 years later. Albion won 3-1 away at Vale Park in 2014.
